Location: In northeastern Afghanistan at 38°0′N 71°0′E and borders Nuristan, Panjshir and Takhar provinces as well as states Tajikistan, China and Pakistan.

Topography: Heavily mountainous with large swaths of the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountain ranges running through it. The Wakan Corridor provides a narrow pass of steep peaks and valleys. Many of the valleys cut through the mountainous province are home to grasslands and shrublands. South of Fayzabad is the only extensive flatlands of the province. The Kokcha River runs through Fayzabad.

As a far northern province separated in many ways from the rest of Afghanistan, including by winter snow that isolates it anually for months at a time, Badakhshan was a bastion of Northern Alliance power throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. It's economy is based on agriculture, especially poppy cultivation, hearding and Lapis lazuli mining. It is home to the Badakhshan National Park, a nature reserve. It has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world due to the lack of healthcare.
