Local Logar officials confirmed today that five residents including three children are missing after flash floods ravaged the province on Tuesday.
Din Mohammad Darwish, spokesman of the Provincial Governor, cited sudden torrential rains as the cause of the floods. Mr. Darwish said that the floods caused heavy property damage, leaving many residents in the central region of Logar homeless.
Provincial officials are focusing resources toward emergency care and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the floods.
The floods that hit Logar on Tuesday join a week submerged in flash flood disasters around the country. On Tuesday, Paktia provincial officials reported two residents missing after floods hit the province on Monday afternoon devastating the Taroo and Ramai districts.
On Saturday, flash floods caused by unexpected downpours resulted in the deaths of 20 people in Kabul province. The floods caused the closing of numerous roads into the capital, grinding commuter traffic to a halt.
The damage caused by the floods this week, however, was relatively minor compared to that which was left by flash floods a week ago. Over 100 people were killed and dozens injured by flash floods that struck Surobi district in Kabul province last week. Surobi officials reported that most residents have lost their homes and farmlands. The district's hospital was also destroyed.
Spring and summer months in Afghanistan commonly bring flash floods in result of heavy rains and the melting of snow and ice in the mountains. However, this year's flood disasters are some of the worst in recent memory.
