Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) officials said on Sunday that at least 20 people were killed in flash floods in Kabul province on Saturday, injuring five others.
Mohammad Aslam Sayas, the Deputy General Director of ANDMA, said that the flash floods caused by heavy downpours hit Shakardara and Paghman districts of Kabul the hardest, killing 19 people in Shakardara and one in Paghman.
However, Abdul Gheyas Patang, the District Governor of Shakardara, reported that a total of 22 people were killed by the flood in his district, with five others injured.
The floods resulted in the closing of numerous roads into the capital, grinding commuter traffic to a halt.
Saturday's floods come a week after over 100 people were killed and dozens injured – most of which were children – in a flash flood that struck Surobi district in Kabul province.
Last week's flood, which were significantly more severe than Saturday's, devastated 13 villages, causing heavy property damage and displacing many families. The flood last week also disabled electricity supply in the area and inundated the Kabul-Jalalabad highway, according to Ghulaam Nabi Ishaqzai, the Surobi District Governor.
Eastern Khost province has also been badly affected by the floods. Ten people were reported dead, including women and children. In total, six districts of the province were affected.
Spring and summer months in Afghanistan commonly bring flash floods in result of heavy rains and the melting of snow and ice in the mountains.
