Local officials of northern Balkh province said on Sunday one civilian was killed and four others, including two police officers, were injured by a suicide bombing in Mazar-e-Sharif.
Abdul Rahman Rahimi, the Balkh Provincial Police Chief, reported that the bomber was targeting the convoy of Mohammad Zhir Wahdat, the Deputy Governor of Balkh.
"The Deputy Governor is fine and he was not hurt in the attack," he said.
The victims of the attack have been rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. A police investigation is underway.
No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Saturday, a suicide bomber drove a explosives-laden car into a checkpoint outside of Kabul Polytechnic University where the Loya Jirga is expected to convene on Thursday. Although casualty reports vary, at least six were reported dead and 22 injured, including civilians, police and army personnel.
