Local officials of Nuristan province on Wednesday confirmed that 20 insurgents and 10 police were killed and 34 others including four police were injured during an operation in the Kamdish District.
The operation was launched on Monday by the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan Local Police (ALP) and ended on Tuesday.. According to reports, two other ALP officers were taken hostage by the Taliban.
The insurgents started a gun-battle with forces that lasted for over 48 hours.
"The clashes continued for over 48 hours in Kamdish District in which 20 insurgents and 10 ALP were killed. Thirty other insurgents and four ALP were injured," said Mohammad Haroon Yousufzai, the head of the Military Media Office in eastern Afghanistan.
The Kamdish district, which borders Pakistan, has been the site of insurgent activity targeting the Afghan security forces' check-posts.
The Taliban has not yet commented on the operations.
The Afghan security forces have ramped up operations across the country to clear vulnerable areas of insurgents in preparation for the upcoming 2014 elections.
There are over 350,000 Afghan soldiers fighting the insurgents across Afghanistan.
Foreign troops are due to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, after handing over full security responsibility to the Afghan forces. But coalition officials maintain that nearly all operational oversight has been handed over to Afghans already.
