At a gathering on Thursday in Kabul, Abdullah Abdullah congratulated President-elect Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, stating that the National Unity Government is a significant step in bringing` the nation together and minimizing ethnic, linguistic and regional divisions.
“Together, we, the government of national unity, will be able to address the problems of the country,” he said. “We’ve come together to, hand in hand, work toward a better tomorrow.”
Addressing the nation, Abdullah apologized for the prolongation in the election process, emphasizing that the National Unity Government agreement was signed with the interests of the nation in mind, rejecting the accusations of political deals for power.
“I apologize to the nation that the election process was not completed sooner,” he said. “All our negotiations in the past months have been to ensure the interests of the nation.”
Additionally, the chief executive to be asserted that the National Unity Government was “an alternative” for both electoral teams and the nation.
“When disagreements emerge, it is easy to resort to violence. But there are severe, damaging consequences that the nation would suffer from,” he said. “The nation doesn’t deserve that.”
