Herat Mayor Claims Candidates Violated Campaign Rules

Complaints against five of the Presidential candidates will be filed to the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC), claimed Herat Mayor Mohammad Salim Tarakai on Thursday.

The Herat government certified particular areas for posters and publicity materials associated with the campaigns, a move that was widely supported by residents.

However, according to officials, five the campaigns have violated those regulations and posted promotional materials on historic sites and others locations designated off-limits.

"We strongly support the plan of the Herat municipality and it is the demand of all residents in the province," Herat resident Niamatollah Hashimi told TOLOnews.

Mayor Tarakai has emphasized that he will not allow the candidates to undermine urban management and city life during the election campaigns.

"We request that the ECC deal with such individuals in accordance to the law and prevent them from violating the law," Mr. Tarakai said.

He declined to provide the names of the candidates who were being reported to the ECC for violations.

Only eight out of the 11 Presidential candidates have opened their offices in the Western Herat province so far.
