Location: In eastern Afghanistan at 33.4°N 69.9°E and borders Paktia and Paktika provinces as well as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan.

Broke off of Paktia province. Khost city, the provincial capital, was the first urban center in Afghanistan to be liberated by the mujahedeen during the Soviet invasion. It was the location of the Camp Chapman attack in 2009, a suicide bombing that occured at an American base in Khost that marked the deadliest attack on the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in more than 25 years.
