The Kabul Municipality Women Council (KMWC) and several members of the civil society institutions organized a "cleanliness drive" in Kabul city on Thursday. The drive was launched to create awareness among the Kabul city residents to keep the city clean and pollution-free. The organizers said that the programme would be launched on a monthly basis in the 4th district of the capital city. The drive was jointly carried out by the KMWC and the civil society institutions from across the country.
According to the recent reports, Kabul city is considered as one of the most-polluted cities in the world. The reports blamed the residents for the increase in the pollution levels in the city.
"The problem is that majority of the Kabul city residents have come from rural areas and do not have civic sense," Rahila Kohistani, a member of the KMWC.
The participants urged the city residents to contribute in keeping the city clean and pollution-free.
Migration of villagers to the metropolitan areas and lack of civic sense among majority of the residents are considered as the major causes behind the increased levels of dirt and pollution in the city.
Meanwhile, several environmentalists have said that the concerned institutions and government departments should run awareness programs and should start penalizing those who pollute or dirty the city.
