Bamyan, meaning "the place of shining light," is the cultural capital of the Hazara ethnic group. In antiquity, Bamyan was a key area along the silk road, in which traders from Rome, Greece and China intersected. It is home to the famous Buddha statues carved out into the side of a cliff face, however, they were largely destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The Band-e Amir lakes are one of the most popular tourist sites in Afghanistan. Bamyan has the only female Governor in the country. It is well-known for its potato farming, but has one of the most successful tourism industries in the country. Alpine skiing is popular there.
