Nangarhar was where Osama Bin Laden was cornered in the "Tora Bora campaign" in 2001 before escaping to Pakistan. The province was also the site of two high-profile incidents surrounding civilian deaths at the hands of U.S. forces, including the 2007 Shinwar shooting and the 2008 Deh Bala wedding party bombing. It used to be one of Afghanistan's lead opium-producing provinces but has since seen a dramatic decline in output, which has made it one of the success stories of the government's eradication program. Hamid Hasan. a member of the Afghan National Cricket Team, is from Nangarhar.
