Local officials on Sunday confirmed that over 100 people have been killed and dozens injured in the flash flood that struck Surobi district in Kabul province. The officials added that the victims were mostly children.
According to reports, 13 villages have been washed away in the floods causing heavy loss of properties and lives. The flood has badly affected the electricity supply and inundated the Kabul-Jalalabad highway. said Ghulaam Nabi Ishaqzai, District Governor.
"Everything is gone, we lost our family," said a resident of the district.
Five members of a family were killed, while four more from that family survived by clinging on to a tree as the floodwaters raged around them. Officials said that four children and a woman have reportedly gone missing.
Khost province has also been badly affected by floods. 10 people were killed, including women and children over the past three days. Six districts of the province have been affected by the flood.
Residents of Khost province have sought help from the government.
Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai's office in a statement said that the President is saddened by the recent natural calamity that has struck the two provinces. Karzai has ordered military and non-military institutions to assist in evacuating the residents of Kabul, Khost and Nuristan provinces.
