The Supreme Court on Monday said that it will soon give out a final verdict on the sensational Sahar Gul case. In light of the development, the Ministry of Women Affairs (MoWA) requested the Supreme Court not to succumb to any kind of pressure and sentence the convicts in the Sahar Gul case to 10 years imprisonment.
Qudsia Niazi, the head of the Special Prosecution Office for Fighting Violence Against Women (SPOFVAW), said that the decision of the Appellate Court is not acceptable and asked the Supreme Court to uphold the Primary Court's verdict.
"We are not satisfied with the decision of the Appellate Court. We want those who tortured Sahar Gul to be punished severely. The decision of the Primary Court should be executed," said Qudsia Niazi.
The development comes in nearly two months after the Primary and Appellate Courts had sentenced Sahar's father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law to 10 years imprisonment, but the Superior Court later reviewed the judgments of the courts and ordered to release the criminals.
While Sahar Gul was waiting for a serious punishment for her torturers, the Court released them. This clearly indicated that the judicial system of Afghanistan is still at a nascent stage.
Releasing the criminals has angered Sahar Gul as she still suffers from the wounds inflicted on her by the in-laws.
The victim, Sahar Gul is constantly living in fear thinking that one day the criminals would be freed. She sought justice from President Karzai for all the torture she underwent. Now 16-years old, she is living in one of the shelter homes in Kabul city and has been finding it very difficult to recover from the mental trauma. She has urged President Karzai and the Supreme Court to severely punish her torturers.
"I demand President Karzai and the Supreme Court severely punish those who treated me brutally," Sahar Gul told TOLOnews.
Release of the torturers convicted for beating Sahar Gul has infuriated the women rights protection institutions and they announced that the release of culprits involved in torturing Sahar Gul shows the deplorable state of women in the country.
"We want that the verdict of the Primary Court is upheld. The torturers of Sahar Gul must be severely punished," said Muzhgan Mustafavi, the Deputy Minister of Women Affairs.
The SPOFVAW demanded that the case of Sahar Gul should be thoroughly investigated by the Attorney General (AG) and said that they are not accepting the verdict of the Appellate Court (AC).
Sahar Gul after spending months in the basement of a private jail in Baghlan was discovered last year and currently, she lives in one of the safe houses in Kabul.
According to reports, Sahar Gul's husband is still absconding and the police have started looking for him.
