An explosion occurred on Jalalabad road in Kabul on Friday evening when a Taliban suicide bomber driving a car detonated outside an international compound. Officials have confirmed a husband and wife dead, and four others injured, including three children and another woman.
The Taliban's spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter, and confirmed that the intended target was the nearby "Green Village" compound.
Kabul Police have confirmed that two civilians were killed by the blast - a husban and a wife - and four others were injured. The injured victims included the deceased couple's three children, and another woman who was traveling with the family. Police said the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqi confirmed to TOLOnews that the bombing occurred outside of the Green Village on Jalalabad road in the 9th District of the capital. The compound houses hundreds foreign civilians, including United Nations (UN) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) personnel.
Kabul Police have reportedly secured the area and begun investigating the incident. The road around the compound is blocked.
Sediqi said preliminary investigations indicated the suicide bomber was driving a sedan laden with explosives. He said it appeared that the assailant's bomb detonated when he struck another car outside of the Green Village compound.
Reportedly the compound was unaffected by the explosion.
Friday evening's attack marks the first major suicide bombing in Kabul in months.
