Faryab means "irrigated land" in Farsi. It has a long history, settled by the Sassanids and then later sacked by the Mongols. It is the home province of famed Islamic philosopher al-Farabi. It was a focal point of violence during the civil war in the 1990s, but the province has been one of the more peaceful areas of the country since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. A number of major development programs around agriculture have been launched in the past decade, including a reforestation initiative.
