On the last of day of the election campaign, mainstream candidates including Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah appeared among their supporters and attempted to explain their agenda for the country. 

Afghanistan’s presidential elections are scheduled for September 28.

Amrullah Saleh, who is running in the elections as first vice president on Ghani’s team, paid his respects to the members of Afghan security forces for their efforts to secure the election process. 

Some of the residents from Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Takhar and Ghor provinces announced their support for Ghani’s State Building campaign. 

On peace, Ghani said: “All people want peace. We are pursuing a clear path for peace to make sure that peace prevails in this country, sustainable peace and dignified peace. There is nothing beneficial in war. But peace will have a benefit for the Afghan people-- not for the government and the Taliban--and we are here to protect the interests of the people.” 

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, who was also campaigning today, said to his supporters at a rally in Kandahar: “I want to assure you that the term of the ‘Lies Government’ is ending.” Abdullah currently shares executive power with President Ghani as the result of a campaign dispute in the 2014 elections.

“Let’s move forward--ask us for accountability in the next five years,” said Ghani. 

Ghani’s team had scheduled a campaign rally in Kabul’s Ghazni Stadium, but it was delayed due to security threats, according to a spokesperson.
