The uncertainties and problems caused by the electoral tensions pushed Afghanistan on the verge of an economic recession as well as contributed to the rise in insecurity around the country. Many blame the Independent Election Commission's (IEC) mismanagement and negligence as reasons for the problems witnessed by many citizens of the country.
A number of MPs have demanded that IEC officials responsible for mismanagement and fraud should be brought to justice.
“When a suicide bomber tries to kill hundreds of people, we arrest him and ask for his execution. What kind of punishment must we consider for the election commission officials who have killed people's aspirations and hopes and created an economic chaos?" asked Ghor MP Sima Joyenda.
Baghlan MP Mohammad Azim Mohseni called on the judicial organs to take legal action against the IEC officials immediately.
“Our legal and judicial organs must take action to make sure nothing similar happens in the future."
Meanwhile, a number of civil society advocates have stressed that the only way to revive people's trust in the electoral bodies is to take the officials involved in fraud to trial.
“The president and the chief executive must put the IEC officials on trial to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future,” civil society activist Faraidoon Fakoor said.
Analysts and MPs believe that the election management bodies, particularly the IEC, must pay for destroying the people's trust in the election process and democracy in the country.
