Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, former President Hamid Karzai asked the National Unity Government to prioritize peace and stability.
”Bringing sustainable peace and security is one of the key tasks of the new elected government. If we had peace, Afghanistan might have been more developed today," the former president said.
Meanwhile, political analysts have emphasized that the next government should fight against corruption, drugs and poverty and mobilize the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).
“The government should strictly fight against corruption. The perpetrators should be arrested and handed over the courts," Kabul University lecturer Syed Jawad Hosseini said.
Moreover, analysts have stressed that the development of the ANSF should also be a top focus of the new government.
"We still don’t have a defense army," political analyst Jawed Kohistani said. "Our army is an anti-insurgent army in need of a lot of work and development."
Also speaking at the inauguration, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah assured the nation that the new government will fight against corruption and safeguard the freedom of speech.
“Fighting against corruption, reforming of election system, elimination of narcotics and smuggling of drugs and freedom of speech will be our priorities," he said.
Putting electoral tensions aside, Ghani and Abdullah have pledged to work with a spirit of partnership and cooperation in the government of national unity.
The nation looks to the future with optimism, hoping that the new government will bring necessary reforms in the next five years.
