Geography
Location: In central Afghanistan at 34°N 65°E and borders Badghis, Faryab, Sar-e Pol, Bamyan, Daykundi, Helmand, Farah and Herat provinces.

Topography: Extremely mountainous as it lies on the western edge of the Hindu Kush. It has small passes that get blocked in the winter months, isolating the small communities that dot the valleys in between peaks. The Morghab, Hirayrud and Farahrud Rivers flow from Ghor into Badghis, Herat and Farah provinces.

The name "Ghor" means mountain in Farsi and Pashto. Archeologists have found evidence of over 7,000 year-old settlements in the province, making it one of the oldest known inhabited areas in Afghanistan. It is home to the famous Minaret of Jam, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
