A number of representatives from Logar province in Parliament on Tuesday voiced concerns that if more was not done to improve the security situation in the province there could be large swaths of it where the upcoming elections cannot be held.
The representatives warned that the Charkh District of Logar is currently on the edge of collapse and Kharwar and Azr districts and other remote areas are also under serious Taliban threat.
“In my opinion, if security situation continues as is, transparent elections are impossible in Logar province,” MP Haji Ali Mohammad Shaidi said.
Meanwhile, the Commander of the 4th Army Corps. General Abdul Razeq Safi acknowledged the current level of insecurity in Logar, but assured that operations were underway and would get things in better shape before the April vote.
“Roadways are closed to security forces and efforts are continuing to reopen them and operations are underway,” Gen. Safi said.
However, MPs on Tuesday called such operations "symbolic", and said that there needed to be more follow-up and consistent effort after the operations are complete.
